Peoria Family Dentist Shares Dental Cleaning Process
Regularly scheduled dental cleanings are essential to maintaining oral health. In these cleanings, a skilled hygienist will remove plaque that may develop in those hard to reach places you can not get to with your normal at-home regimen. You should be scheduling these types of appointments at least once every six months.
How it's done:
Typically, your dental cleaning will last between 30 and 60 minutes. One of our trained hygienists will perform the cleaning and either Dr. Whitson or Dr. Cunningham will come in after for an exam. Most patients find these cleanings do not cause any discomfort or pain at all.
The cleaning will be performed in two important steps. The first one includes a scaling of the teeth, where the hygienist removes tartar and plaque from the surfaces of the teeth. This will be done with either a hand or electric instrument, depending on the hygienist's preference. The pockets of the gums will be targeted in this process as well, as they are known to be particular spots of trouble and build-up for most patients.
Secondly, a polishing is completed to remove any leftover plaque and to buff the teeth. Polishers generally have several different sized heads to clean hard to reach places.
